Lin MingJun uses monochrome frames derived from ink to offset images that are as sophisticated as they are absurd. This piece employs the medium of byobu (“screen painting”) via two contrasting forms.
The first form is the outline of the work itself, which resembles that of a single folding screen. The second is the individual screen panels which have been painted onto the frame.
The screen panels that exist within the frame and the byobu shape of the outline overlap as two separate layers, creating a structure wherein a second dimension seems to penetrate the flat dimension of the painting. The boundaries between inner and outer, flat and three-dimensional, become increasingly blurred and the spatial qualities of the piece will shift depending on the point from which it is observed.
