Exhibitions

This will be the first-ever Japanese exhibition of artwork by James Isherwood, an American artist
based in New York. Isherwood’s paintings juxtapose psychedelic colors with the sudden emergence of simple, linear structures. These contrasting elements co-exist within the frame in a constant state of exquisite tension. Each piece simultaneously exudes the mysterious aura of the unknown and the quiet tranquility of a scenic landscape, resulting in a unique artistic universe that visitors are sure to enjoy.

Research begins with many images of architecture on the internet, as well as my own photography. Once I’ve chosen certain silhouettes that interest me, the works can begin to branch out. They often mirror each other and by combining the silhouettes there are unusual patterns that appear. The use of multiple drawings and compositions offer images within images that color the spaces. Presently in some newer works multiple drawings contain other smaller worlds within.

The paintings integrate architectural protagonists moving through multicolored landscapes, portals and voids. Within the landscapes of the mind, there is a deep fascination with time travel. The structures belie references to Modernist homes with a twist of the unknown. There are aspects of slowly unfolding tension within each work.

Beginning a painting is abstract and fluid. From there it begins to form the addition of atmosphere and structure that hones the piece to its next stage where detail begins to arrive.
