In Sayaka Sakurai’s first exhibition with SEIZAN GALLERY TOKYO凸, the artist will use the opportunity to present her first ever large-scale painting.
Sakurai’s works employ “boundaries” as their primary theme. The vast landscapes she paints are intermittently dotted with a rough sense of menace. In her mind, “Paintings are a way for us to stand in our world and view what is on the other side, or perhaps a window through which we can travel back and forth.” We hope you look forward to experiencing this uncertain domain and its magnetically dangerous charm for yourself.

My artworks are devices that enable me to criss-cross boundaries and observe things that can’t be fully perceived with the five senses.
From the mirrored layer of unreality that appears within reality to memories that we convince ourselves are reality, there are phenomena that trigger our sense of something undetectable on both sides of an invisible divide, like a window on a submarine. When I encounter those phenomena,an uncanny sensation swells within me and makes me aware of those boundaries.
This realm and that one, reality and fiction, you and me; the boundaries represented by these seemingly unknown landscapes, windows, mirrors, and dreams are quite vague, but if you synchronize channels, I believe they can be crossed. It is a source of both anxiety and salvation as we carry out our lives in this world.
