Kumiko Negami’s humorous, attention-grabbing sculptures linger long in the viewer’s memory. Her practice is focused on the expression of antinomies, revealing the world in all its imperfections, rather than merely depicting what is beautiful or orderly. With tolerance for contradictions, her works ultimately reflect a tranquil acceptance of reality, born from a tough brand of tenderness.

As human beings, we are often troubled by our desire to receive acceptance and favor from others. Does that not make “acceptance” one of the major themes of human life?
We could be served a ladybug in an octopus marinade or get stuck between oversized faces in a Daiei elevator, but even then, we might hesitate to show annoyance. After all, the desire for “acceptance” compels us to worry about how we are seen.
Worse, the common desire to be “attractive” is even more sinful. It is truly a force of human karma.
That’s why, for all of us foolish humans who want to be attractive but don’t want to work for it, I offer up this piece as an easy way to experience ‘acceptance’ from others. How you interpret it is up to you.
