Ikuo Hirayama [Heisei rakuchū rakugai-zu migi seki)], Lithograph, 55.6cm x 112.0cm

Throughout his career, Hirayama pursued the headwaters of Japanese culture. Having spent over thirty years traveling all over the world, he arrived finally in Kyoto, the end point of that pursuit.
The concept for this work dates back to 1982 and the number of sketches numbers several hundred or more sheets. In addition, the artist also boarded a helicopter to draw the bird’s-eye view of Kyoto rendered in the painting.
At once modern and old, one can sense the breath of people from olden times. This is a work that crosses eras and portrays Kyoto’s timeless universal beauty.
