Aka Fuji (Red Fuji)

Successful throughout the Meiji, Taisho, Showa and Heisei eras, Yuki Ogura was a pioneer of female Japanese painters. Although more well-known for her portraiture, she has also painted many still lifes. This Fuji, is a very valuable work in the few landscapes of the painter’s repertoire. The light of the morning sun reflecting on the clouds, colors Fuji a brilliant red. This very rare phenomenon and is said to be an auspicious sign, and the pattern in art and design is considered to be a very auspicious pattern. This “Red Fuji”, drawn in her later years, is a bold and simple composition with a strong presence. A beautiful work with the crisply defined and dignified air of the highlands.
