Tamako Kataoka [Medataki Fuji], Lithograph, 26.6cm x 37.0cm

Fuji is revered by the Japanese people as a symbol of Japan’s beauty, and has been considered sacred from ancient times. In this work, the pine, bamboo and plum which are symbols of auspicious events have been grouped together and their appearance is elegant. Painted in bold colors with Kataoka’s distinctively strong line, is it is a powerful work. In a career spanning 80 years, Fuji remained a special focus in her painting for over 40 years.  Employing and refining this style of painting, her work fascinated us. As this work was painted in her later years it could also be said to be the culmination of her art.
